VRS has 20 community based sites located in Vancouver and Burnaby.  We currently have approximately 250 staff to support our clients which include regular full-time, part-time and casual employees working in our operation 24/7.  The shifts run for a minimum of 4 hours per day to a maximum of 10 hours per day and provides a shift premium for evening, night and weekend shifts.

Our Human Resources Department hires Residential Care Attendants and Program Workers following a strict hiring procedure for individuals selected to work in our Programs. VRS staff must have the appropriate certification to be hired. Staff in Residential Care must have a  6 month full-time Health Care Aide Certificate by a recognized Canadian Educational Institution.  VRS supports the Vancouver Community College (VCC) for Health Services and provides practicum placements at our sites for the VCC Program as well.

Residential Care

Individuals selected for interviews for employment must emulate caring qualities to work with our clients. Candidates must be able and interested in providing physical personal care for clients and create a home-like environment in each setting.  Candidates must have a desire to increase their knowledge and skills in mental and physical health issues.  All candidates when hired must provide a clear criminal record check, TB Test, and Physicians report stating that you are physically fit to perform the duties of the position.

VRS Day Program

Vancouver Resource Society also provides a Day Program for individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities to integrate into the community.  Applicants selected for employment in this program must be willing to provide life skills training, be a positive role model, support the client's individual goals through creative and innovative programs. Successful candidates  must be enthusiastic, team focused, be able to lead programs, participate in diverse activities and provide leadership in indoor and outdoor programs.

All Program Workers for VRS must have a Theraputic Recreation Diploma (Minimum 2 years) or Social Science Degree. Employees must also obtain an Unrestricted Class 4 drivers licence,provide a clear criminal record check,TB test and a Physician report of fitness. 

Program Worker Job Description

Orientation and Training

VRS has an extensive training program which includes Orientation, Training On-Site, RN Specified Training and (5) mandatory in-Services. Training/orientation is a minimum of 25 hours. Staff must be competent to perform the duties of the position/shift. VRS has several on-site manuals on various topics to assist staff understanding their role and responsiblies at the Site level.

A comprehensive policy and procedures manual is at every location and all staff members are responsible to ensure that they have read and understood key policies ( highlighted during orientation period). In addition, VRS offers continuing education programs as needed to increase employee skills.
