Pearls of Wisdom

In these difficult and uncertain days, who better to ask for words of wisdom than from those who have life experience! Many seniors have lived through some hard and challenging times in their lives and any thoughts, insights, or words of comfort that you can share on how we can all get through this would be most appreciated!

Submitted by Betty Severind, a resident at Sunnyside Manor

Living with this time of COVID-19 virus is like living through a terrible storm. We’d like to hide our heads under the covers and wish it would go away. But every storm comes to an end, and the sum comes out, and things look brighter, and it will again. At the age we are we have weathered many storms and we are still here to weather another if we have to.

Easter Celebrations

Great memories were made at all of the seniors’ residences as everyone celebrated Easter in a new way.

In the spirit of the easter weekend, Esther Naumenko, a resident at Silver Springs, wrote a beautiful poem thanking everyone for working hard to keep them safe.

ODE TO SILVER SPRINGS

Thank you staff, for all your care
The extra burden that you bare
So we are well, you keep us apart
For this god bless you, from our heart

Let’s Make Some Noise!

A daily salute to our frontline healthcare workers.

Let’s join the world at 7pm every evening to show our appreciation for the work that is being done by the tireless, dedicated nurses, doctors, care aides, first responders and all essential service providers through these difficult times. Step out onto your balconies, open your doors or windows and applaud, cheer, yell and bang pots in a daily salute to these true heroes!

Thank you Parallel 49 and Downtown Kia

Vancouver Resource Society’s Adult Day Program sends a big thank you to Vancouver’s own Parallel 49 Brewing Company for their production of hand sanitizers and Downtown Kia for the delivering them to our participants and staff at our West 10th location. We are so appreciative of companies like these that are going above and beyond to ensure we all stay healthy, especially for those who are most vulnerable. We’ll all get through this together!

Thank You To All of Our Staff

Team,

As we come to the end of a week like no other I can remember, I want to send a note to say thank you. In the past two weeks, a constant barrage of new COVID-19 developments, information and regulations have turned the world upside down. The fundamental routines and rhythms of our daily lives – at home and at work – have significantly changed, and we have had to completely rethink and reprioritize our personal and our company priorities, processes and procedures.

Despite what has felt at times like chaos and confusion, what stands out for me from this past week or so is the grit, determination and commitment demonstrated by our employees at VRS. I am impressed by our teams’ toughness, compassion, dedication, work ethic and loyalty. It is in our DNA to forge ahead and get it done. I respect, value and admire that.

There is no playbook or precedent for the climate we are living in, as we diligently try to balance the need to keep our residents, clients and employees safe. We know you, your families and our residents and clients depend on us and we take this responsibility seriously.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you for your efforts, your honesty, your hard work, your commitment and most importantly your trust.

With best wishes,
Ken Fraser
Executive Director, VRS

VRS continues to monitor all of our Community Living and Seniors Living residences by following BCCDC protocols at each of our sites. Our focus remains on minimizing our residents’ exposure to COVID-19, in every aspect of their daily living. In order to further contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus from entering our buildings, VRS is now implementing further restrictions on visitation.

Therefore effective immediately, no visitors will be allowed access into the buildings until further notice. We are sensitive to the separation this restriction causes our residents and their loved ones, but we believe this measure of protection is essential at this time to keep our residents safe with the continued spread of COVID-19 across the province. Some exceptions, which will be subject to screening before visitation, will be made for essential care and services at the discretion of the site General Manager.

Our team remains vigilant in our efforts and are doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of our residents, families, employees, suppliers and service providers.

Ensuring the health and well-being of our residents and employees is always our highest priority.  In response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus), VRS is committed to protecting our senior’s population, employees and service providers. As outlined below, we have implemented Infection, Prevention and Control (IPC) strategies in all of our Independent and Assisted Living Residences across British Columbia and Alberta.

To date, we are fortunate to not have any known or confirmed cases of COVID-19 within our resident populations including staff and family members.

Our leadership team is mobilized to provide each location with medical advice, clinical direction, emergency preparedness plans and business continuity plans. We are ensuring that we have staffing plans in place as well as adequate supplies of medical and pharmaceutical products, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and food.

VRS is following all recommended guidelines from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and we continually monitor these guidelines for updates and developments related to COVID-19 (coronavirus). According to the BCCDC, the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is currently low but because our resident population is more vulnerable than the general public, we are intensifying our preventative measures in order to mitigate the spread of the virus.

In response to the continued spread of COVID-19, and in addition to our routine practices and precautions, the following additional protections have been updated and are effective immediately:

We have implemented an Essential Visitors only policy. Upon arrival to the building, visitors will require consent and active screening by the management of the residence in order to proceed into the building. Once approved, they will then be directed to wash their hands and/or utilize available hand sanitizer moving forward and again when exiting the residence. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Visitors include family members, health care workers, caregivers, contractors, and suppliers.

Those diagnosed with COVID-19 or those who have reason to believe that they, someone in their household or someone they have close contact with has been exposed to COVID-19 are prohibited from entering our residences.

Anyone who has traveled outside of Canada in the last 14 days, or anyone sharing a household with a person who has traveled outside Canada in the last 14 days are prohibited from entering our residences.

Enhanced screening protocol for new residents is in place to ensure they have not been exposed to COVID-19 or visited affected areas.

In addition to the Essential Visitors policy;

Additional cleaning protocols include:

We are regularly updating both VRS residents and family members via email and our website, but if you have an urgent question, as always, please reach out to the General Manager of your residence.
